Historian, author and public servant, Rusden initially spent time in New South Wales in the pastoral industry, before moving to the colony of Victoria. Rusden travelled throughout his life, to China, New Zealand and England, returning to Melbourne in the 1890s. As well as writing histories, Rusden was fascinated by and published and lectured on William Shakespeare.
