Summary
Notes by A.W. Howitt on meeting head men in camp. Notes on the reverse discuss barter by the Dieri with neighbouring groups. Group not identified. Howitt hoped to meet a 'Pina Pinaru' (Great Great One), but unable to come as he was too old. Annotation states: 'Transfer to chapter on Head men'. Notes on the reverse describe Dieri exchange of weapons with southern neighbours for skins of kangaroo, and with northern and eastern neighbours for shields. Ornamental belts also bartered. The notes on head men identified as a draft for p. 300, Chapter VI, Tribal Government, in 'Native Tribes of South East Australia', 1904.
