statement with suspicion, because
the custom is in accordance with
the queeral class law - at least, it
is not an offence against it -
+ we may expect to find, here as
elsewhere, local regulations peculiar
to a tribe. How they arose is a
most interesting question, but
generally a hopelessly unanswerable
one. In 99 cases out of a hundred
the only explanation attainable is
"Our fathers did so".

It is quite possible however
that the kalya [underlined] may include others
besides those who are "of one father
+ mother" [underlined]. Would it not be well to
inquire whether, if a man have
two wives, all his children are
not kalya one to another?
