A Gippsland District Surveyor. Dawson was born in Ireland, where he completed his education and was articled to a local surveyor. Dawson travelled first to Tasmania, where his father had settled. In 1847 he arrived in the Port Phillip Settlement and worked for the government as a surveyor.
