William Thorpe was a Brabralung man who came from around Bairnsdale. William stayed at Lake Tyers from its beginnings in the early 1860s and worked hard on the station. John Bulmer described him as 'industrious' and he was acknowledged publicly for his hard work in fencing and building. He married Lilian (Lily) Wilson. For a period in the 1880s, William and Lily looked after children living in the dormitory at Lake Tyers. The 1886 Aborigines Protection Act forced William and Lily off of Lake Tyers. They had a farm at Lakes Entrance where William grew beans, potatoes and had an orchard. Here he raised a family, including Harry Thorpe, who joined the army during WW1 and lost his life in Lihons Wood, France.
