The Editor of the "Australian"
Melbourne

Dear Sir
I have read with interest Mr W Craig's
communication in the Australian of the 19th inst on the subject of the name
"Kangaroo".
Permit me now to point out as a
further contribution to the discussion of this
much disputed name that another
explanation is suggested by a "Vocabulary
of Australian aborigines in the neighbourhood of Cooktown
N. Queensland" by Richard Phillips with a
note by Sydney H. Ray. This appeared
in the |Journal of the Anthropological Institute
of Gt Britain of August 1897, and it
includes the following inst:
"Thumb Mangal-Kangaroo
"Toe (great) - Tamal - Kangaroo
