the heads of departments in fact
decimated the service. You cannot
imagine the shock it has been to the
reputable part of society and no
daylight can yet be seen through
the storm. They have threatened to
stop the railways, the post + telegraph
offices, discharge the gaolers + lunatic
warders and take in fact the
whole machine to pieces! The worst
feature is that they are backed up
by a very strong party in the country
- the working men - alles uns! Of course I
have been one of the victims and
have had no time to devote to Ethnology
or anything else than the working
of my hops ground and farm.
We commence picking hops tomorrow
and I shall be up to my ears in
work for the next month. This
will be an anxious time. It
is very different growing hops as an
