I send it however to shew that I have not
neglected my promise.
We have here now a kind of pirate
association of planters and others who have
to a certain extent taken charge of the blacks
until the government take some steps as
we hope they will soon, to deal with the
Aboriginal question, and we employ a person
who understands the language and takes
an interest in them to look after them visiting
the different plantations where they work +c,
the affair is reasonably successful, + although there
is plenty of room for improvement, I think
[however- crossed out] we have done more here with these
natives than has been accomplished elsewhere
I have noticed the exposure you have
made in Victoria about practices among
the islands, there are about 750 islanders
