Clamor Wilhelm Schurmann

Schurmann arrived in the colony of South Australia in the early 1838. He was a Lutheran Missionary and was appointed Protector of Aborigines in the Port Lincoln district at this time. Schurmann acted as an interpreter also, being in a position to learn about Barngarla language, knowledge and practices and the violence and challenges of colonisation upon the Barngarla community. As a result of his engagement with Barngarla people in these roles he published a dictionary of Barngarla language in 1844 and a book about the Barngarla people of Port Lincoln in 1846.
