Scottish born ethnologist and pastoralist in the Camperdown area of western Victoria, Dawson wrote Australian Aborigines: The Languages and Customs of Several Tribes of Aborigines in the Western District of Victoria with his daughter, Isabella. The book was published in 1881. He was a Local Guardian for the Board for Protection of Aborigines after 1876 and raised concerns about and on behalf of local Aboriginal people with both the BPA and in the local press.
